“Waterbillies”

In honor of my brother’s belated birthday, siblings day last week, and his impending graduation from college, I am posting a collection of photographs of us when we were kids, hanging out at the boatyard.

“Waterbilly” is the term some friends came up with to call a kid who grew up on the tributaries of the Cheasapeake Bay, stomping through swamps; catching grass shrimp along the bulkhead; knowing how to spot invasive phragmites swamp grass; fishing, crabbing, and canoeing; growing and planting sea grass for 7th grade science class; loving raw raw oysters, and knowing how to efficiently pick a blue crab, always with a little bit of “creek muck” lingering between our toes….
